FSG students in St. Petersburg, Russia

From September 9 to 24, a group of FSG students under the tutelage of Russian teacher Frau Hanna Scholle and Herr Martin Haverkamp was given a warm welcome at »Goethe School« in St. Petersburg. Read the detailed report by Victoria Evers of grade 11.

To get an impression of what this year’s stay was like, please look at the series of 21 photographs (spread out over five web pages).

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the student exchange between FSG and Goethe School, Frau Scholle wrote a brief history of the partnership.

Students from Etampes, France, at FSG
In the evening of October 19, our French guests arrived in Lünen. They stayed until Thursday, October 26. Read the programme of their activities here.
Latin pupils visited Roman camp at Oberaden

On October 20, eighth-grade boys and girls visited the Roman military camp and museum at Oberaden. Having prepared delicious meals according to genuine Roman recipes, they closely inspected archaeological objects found in the vicinity. 2000 years ago, the camp served as a stronghold securing the Lippe River against Germanic tribes trying to infiltrate from the East.

The extremely well-informed tour guide who showed the group around the museum was Frau Neugebauer, the wife of our former head teacher.

Read the exhaustive report by Herr Suckrau and look at the photographs taken during the visit.

Foreign-language assistant teacher at FSG
Mme Karine Rioux, FSG’s new teaching assistant, started working on Monday, October 23. For the first few weeks she will sit in on regular teachers’ lessons and then will help teaching French.
For the 33rd time: Alumni celebrate final exam of 1967
On November 5, Norbert Kortmann, FSG alumnus of the class of ’67 and now a citizen of Münster, sent this e-mail message to the FSG website editorial staff: »I have just returned home from Lünen where we celebrated the 33rd reunion of the class of ’67. Ten of the 15 graduates showed up at ›Roggenmarkt‹ restaurant – that’s not a bad turnout, is it?«
Four times in »Körperwelten« exhibition
On November 14, Biology teacher Herr Rudolf Leismann – for the fourth time – accompanied an FSG class to »Körperwelten – Fascination Beneath the Surface«, the Oberhausen exhibition that has just been prolonged until January 28, 2001.
Class 9b, with whom Herr Leismann went there, is currently studying human anatomy, as have all the other classes that he has hitherto taken there. The boys and girls were rather impressed by the exhibits. Some of them bought a postcard comparing a smoker’s and a non-smoker’s lung – to show their cigarette-puffing parents.

This year’s first Letter To Parents published

Our Letter To Parents is printed and handed out to parents four times per year: once at each of the two semi-annual parents’ visiting days, and once with each of the two report cards. For the last three years, the Letter has not only been published on paper but also, and identically, in the World Wide Web – in the web layout used for the FSG website since January 2000.

Please read what pupils, parents, and teachers have to say in our Letter To Parents of Thursday, November 16, 2000.

Use their postal addressor check out their website.
Seminar paperssoon due to be written!
On the last day of school before Christmas recess, all 12th-grade students were given a copy of the Manual for Writing Seminar Papers. In the weeks before, the 30-plus teachers with courses in 12th grade had compiled the 58-page manual in working groups – now they and their students could take the manual home to prepare for January 15, a day of study that is to introduce students to the art of writing a seminar paper.
Model seminar paper can be downloaded here

Since January 11, students can download a model seminar paper from this website. This paper was done in MICROSOFT WORD, the international standard word processor. There is an Apple Macintosh version as well as a Windows version.

The model paper embodies all text formats relevant to seminar papers, which facilitates both word processing and layout.

DELF candidates were successful

In January, 13 girls of FSG managed to pass part of their DELF tests. The tests for the »Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française« (DELF) are conducted by the »Institut Français« in Düsseldorf and consist of four exam parts (A1 to A4) with an oral and a written examination each.

To take part in an exam of the next highest level applicants must have passed the exam of the previous level.

Eleven girls passed the exam at level A2, two girls passed it at level A1. The girls were accompanied by French teacher Ms Michaela Thamm.

The next examination is scheduled for April (written exam) and May (oral exam). Right now, candidates are applying to participate. Whoever wants to join the group is invited to do so. Currently, there are more than 30 applications already:

  • A1 – about 15 applications (from ninth grade onwards)

»Before I became a university student, I didn’t know a thing about process engineering or chemical engineering. That’s why I would like to inform FSG students about it.«

FSG is getting ready to introduce »language portfolio«
Soon, FSG fifth-graders will be given a pretty binder to document their progress in learning foreign languages. The languages to be documented include the foreign languages taught at FSG plus whatever language each student is learning privately.
At the end of their school career, FSG students will use the »portfolio« to show what languages they have learned during their nine years at school.
Dr Werner Jordan, pupil and donor of FSG
On March 10, when the »Werner Jordan Foundation« was officially proclaimed in a ceremony in our new pavilion, Deputy Headmaster Herr Jürgen Korn gave a speech commemorating Dr Jordan, who donated the funds for the new charity bearing his name.
FSG students in Etampes

16 boys and girls of FSG spent a week in Etampes, near Paris, with pupils of »Institution Jeanne d’Arc«. This was the follow-up visit to the stay of the French boys and girls in Lünen between October 19 and 26, 2000.

Read the programme of activities prepared for our pupils in Etampes – a report with photographs will soon follow.

Student body organizes another »week of special activities«
The motto of this year’s »action week« was »Olympia – Being at FSG is all that counts«. The event was organized by FSG’s student body representatives. They were helped by teachers Herr Graas, Herr Kramer and Herr Loer. The latter also contributed a text relevant to the motto of this »action week».
Class of 1991 has begun with preparations for tenth anniversary
A group of 1991 alumni including André Wulle and Deniz Gürsoy are preparing the tenth anniversary of their graduation. The class reunion is scheduled for Saturday, September 15, 2001. To help organize the event better, a website has been installed. Also, Deniz Gürsoy has started a newsgroup and a newsletter. You can subscribe to either by sending e-mail to fsg_abi91@yahoogroups.com.
A day of on-the-job training for all FSG teachers

On May 2, the school organized an on-the-job training seminar on the use of electronic media in the classroom. Teachers were introduced to using computers and the internet in teaching these subjects or groups of subjects: German, English, French, Geography, Music, Mathematics/Computer Science, Physics/Chemistry, Biology, and Social Sciences.

Ten outside trainers recruited by the state government’s e-nitiative had come to FSG for the day. In the days before, a group of FSG teachers organizing the technical side of the event had hooked up the school’s 25 Apple Macintosh computers with our internet access, using 160 metres of cable and four hubs in the process. The hubs were sponsored by former pupil Jörg Wilhelm’s company Wilhelm Mikroelektronik GmbH and are to remain with the school after the event.

Second parents’ visiting day, third Letter To Parents published
On May 3, FSG teachers held their second parents’ visiting day this scholastic year. On that occasion, another issue of our regular Letter to Parents was handed out to pupils.
Former tenth-graders come together for tenth anniversary

It is true: The final exam – our »Abitur« – is the most important exam in the school career of »Gymnasium« pupils. But the end of tenth grade, when six years of continuous form life come to an end to make way for courses, is considered by many pupils to be hardly less incisive an occasion than »Abitur«.

Thirteen years after the dissolution of their tenth-grade form, a number of former pupils met with their erstwhile form master, Herr Hans Haller. Read their report.

FSG pupils finalized DELF exams

On Saturday, May 12, FSG students ended their DELF exams by undergoing oral exams at Witten’s »Ruhrgymnasium«. Written exams were taken on Friday, May 18, at FSG. On both occasions, Ms Thamm was present to help the students overcome their nervousness and to give final tips.

All in all, 32 students participated in the DELF examination: 16 students at level A1, two students at level A2, 13 students at level A3, and one student at level A4. We are crossing our fingers! Hopefully, results will be in by the beginning of the summer holidays.

As this round of DELF exams is coming to an end, the next round is already coming up on the agenda. Prospective candidates should contact Ms Thamm.

Portraits of FSG headmasters now in the WWW

When Dr Jürgen Czischke, FSG headmaster, was introduced to his current position in the winter of 1999, Herr Jürgen Korn, then acting headmaster, presented to him an A4-size folding gallery of FSG headmasters’ portraits. Since then, the gallery has been prominently displayed in Dr Czischke’s office.

The gallery may now be seen here in the FSG website.

As a NOKIA trainee in Finland
Sebastian Streich, former FSG pupil of the Class of 1996 and currently a trainee with NOKIA in Finland, has again sent a fascinating report of his life in Tampere.
Class-of-’86 alumni to organize class reunion
Heike Hartmann, graduate of the Class of 1986, is preparing a class reunion for the 15th return of the class’s graduation in 2001. Alumni are invited to get in contact with the organisers of the event.
Another »Break Concert«

During the first break on Thursday, June 7, the Fifth-To-Tenth-Grade Choir under the direction of Herr Carsten Schattauer sang »Aladdin« by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, a tune from the animated Walt Disney production of the same title. The second tune sung by the choir was »Daylight In Your Eyes« by »No Angels«.

The boys and girls of the F-T-T-G Choir were rather satisfied with the applause in this their 13th »Break Concert«. They have already announced their next appearances.

Here comes Sara
One of the two exchange students of the next scholastic year will be Sara Kerényi from Hungary.Sara’s stay here is organized by the »American Field Service« (AFS).
Fishing for compliments just isn’t enough... you have to catch one every once in a while

Max Ebbinghaus, FSG exchange student in Québec for another three weeks, graciously had this to report from one of his last lessons in Canada:

Oh, by the way, bevor I forget mentioning it: My French teacher told me to cordially congratulate my teachers in Germany on their teaching success. I am to tell them that our German school system must be an excellent one.

Thanks, Max, we have understood.

Read Max’ complete mail of Juni 16.

Applause for the »FSG Eighty-seven«

That was the number of students who passed this year’s final »Abitur« exams, which is to say they are believed to be sufficiently well prepared to take up university studies. Five of the students who had applied for »Abitur« failed the exams.

»Abitur« diplomas were handed over in the presence of parents and staff in a stylish celebration at Hilpert Theatre at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 15. The »Abitur« finalists themselves contributed to the event by performing sketches representative of their school life and by muscial presentations.

After the celebration, the – then – former students, their parents and teachers switched localities and walked to neighbouring »Hanse Hall« to continue festivities until late at night.

»Midsummer« reading from Nietzsche’s texts

On Thursday, June 21, a group of philosophy students encouraged by biology and philosophy teacher Herr Thorsten Kramer used the octogon in the school yard to read to varying audiences of fellow students, teachers and parents from Friedrich Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra, his »acknowledged literary and philosophical masterpiece in biblical narrative form« (Encyclopaedia Britannica) – the whole day long.

And in this context, »day« literally means »day«: The students started their reading under the octogon’s leafy planes at sunrise (i.e., at 4.29 a.m.) and ended at sunset (i.e., at 9.53 p.m.). To help listeners understand the text, the students had thought up dramatic elements characterizing the modes and manners in which Nietzsche’s Zarathustra exhorts the world.

FSG to receive solar energy power plant
If the initiative by tenth-grade pupils in Herr Gehrmann’s and Herr Haverkamp’s joint Biology-Chemistry Elective Course goes through, FSG will soon have a solar energy power plant in the »open-air classroom« at the top of its roof. Sponsors have already been approached.
Seventh-graders enjoy stay at »Lucky Castle«
For our seventh-graders it was a week full of events at »Schwennauhof« Youth Camp in Glücksburg, the traditional venue of this annual field trip to the Baltic Sea, 400 miles from Lünen on Flensburg Bay. To add to the bliss, the week from June 18 to 25 was graced with the sunniest weather in years.
Huge turnout at summer concert

FSG’s assembly hall almost cracked in its seams when on Wednesday, June 27, the annual summer concert began at 6 p.m. Under the direction of the music teachers, these choirs and bands performed:

  • the Fifth-To-Tenth-Grade Choir
  • the Students’-Parents’-Teachers’ Choir
  • the Instrumental Band for fifth and sixth grade
  • the Instrumental Band for years seven through 13
  • the newly-formed Rock Band (the formation to succeed Steingeist Band)
  • the Violin Consort
  • the Brass Consort and others
Max to go Max to come

«Je me baladais sur l’avenue
le coeur ouvert à l’inconnu
J’avais envie de dire bonjour
à n’importe qui.»

Aux Champs-Élysées

That is how on July 1 Max Ebbinghaus, FSG exchange student in Québec, Canada, began his last e-mail to relatives, friends and teachers in Germany. The reason behind this: Max will leave Québec and return to Lünen on Thursday, July 5.

Sois le bienvenu, Max!

15th »Break Concert«

It was hot both outside and in the assembly hall where, on July 3, the 15th break concert took place. The programme:

  • Form 8b sang English-language pop songs with lyrics written by themselves
  • The newly-formed Rock Band presented themselves with the most recent additions to their repertory
The end I
On Wednesday, July 4, after two regular lessons, students were given their annual report cards and this year’s last Letter To Parents and then sent home.
The end II

After the third period teachers sat together until 1.15 p.m. for their end-of-year staff conference.

At the end of the conference, teachers had to empty their postal boxes in the staff room and to take home the teaching aids, test books, confiscated toys, video cassettes and all the other flotsam the scholastic year 2000/2001 had washed up there and in the smokers’ room.

The summer holidays will see the first renovation of the staff rooms since they were put in use in 1984.

The end III

If this is a breach of confidentiality, it is not a serious one: The most important topic of the end-of-year staff conference was the farewell to Horst Dahmen, German, English and religious-instruction teacher at FSG since 1991.

Herr Dahmen has been a highly visible member of the FSG staff. He left indelible traces in FSG’s school life by co-founding and co-organizing the »Club of Productive Christians«, an extra-curricular group of students and teachers holding ecumenical services greatly enlivened by texts and musical contributions prepared by the students themselves. For many years, these services have been among the most highly frequented school events.

Herr Dahmen is leaving FSG to teach at a school in the neighbourhood of his home at Iserlohn, 35 miles from Lünen. FSG headmaster Dr Czischke, staff representatives and representatives of the three departments that Herr Dahmen was a member of thanked him cordially for his work and for having been such a good colleague and wished him well for the start at his new school.
