Our scholastic year 2002/2003...

... began on Monday, September 2:

  • Teachers had a staff meeting beginning at 8.10
  • Move-up re-examinations began with tests at 8.15
  • For all the other boys and girls at FSG, school started with form master’s lessons at 10.05.
Move-up re-examinations: the results

On the first two days of school, pupils who had to stay down at the end of last school year were given an opportunity to have themselves re-examined in one of the subjects they failed in:

  • 25 boys and girls were entitled to take part in the move-up re-examinations
  • 15 of them passed the exams and were allowed to move up
  • 10 failed. They now have to stay down and repeat the class they failed.
New fifth-graders were given a warm welcome
On Wednesday, September 4, pupils and teachers at FSG gave a welcome party for our 124 new fifth-graders.

The new boys and girls were presented with a special FSG binder, a gift that was made possible by the »FSG Friends’ and Supporters’ Club«.

Read the programme of the welcome party and look at pictures taken there.

Welcome, Matthew Cragg!

This year’s foreign exchange student is from Spokane, Washington.

Matthew has been attending FSG for about two weeks now. He is staying with the Ebbinghaus Family, whose three sons all were exchange students themselves. Max, the youngest of the Ebbinghaus sons, returned from Valleyfield, Québec, in the summer of last year and is now a student of our 13th grade. So, Matthew couldn’t have picked a family that is better prepared to host an exchange student!

New scholastic identity cards for students and teachers

Until now, our student identity cards were grey booklet-sized affairs that were easily crumpled in wallets or purses. The new cards will be the size of credit cards. Teachers will also obtain a card, which will supposedly allow them to document more easily their teacher’s status when on excursions and field trips with their pupils.

Issue of the cards will be free both for the card holders and the school.

The photographs to be incorporated in the new identity cards were taken between Monday, September 16, and Wednesday, September 18. Two shots were taken: one in the style of a police photo gallery with a placard being held to the chest that gave the name and birthday of the person photographed…

… and another one for use in the new card. With roughly 1,000 people to be photographed, this was apparently the only way to avoid mix-ups.
Now available in this website: The chronicle of 2001/2002
The chronicle of last school year has just been uploaded to our website. It’s available in English, too. 310 web pages and pictures give life to this review of our last school year.
13th-graders are back from their field trips

The students of our 13th grade have just returned from their field trips and have been taking part in regular lessons again since Monday, September 30. This year’s trips took the students to three different places abroad:

  • Mathematics, Geography and German Honours courses went to Tuscany, accompanied by Herr Berg, Herr Böhmer, Frau Elsinghorst, Frau Hecker, Herr Hischemöller and Herr Stemmerich
  • the two Educational Science Honours courses likewise went to Tuscany, accompanied by Herr Gehrmann, Herr Janßen and Frau Pesch
  • the two English Honours courses went to Malta, accompanied by Herr Klug, Herr Suckrau and Frau Thomale.

Reports about the trips are due to be in soon and will be published here.

»Swingin’ Stone«: FSG autumn concert
Agreed: It’s a young tradition, but a tradition nonetheless  – our autumn concert. It took place this year on Thursday, October 10, in our Great Hall. Several choirs and instrumental groups, our »Student-Parent-Teacher Choir«, our girls’ rock band »Stones On Stage«, our String and Brass Group, a Music basic course and two 7th grade Music classes contributed to the multi-faceted programme of the evening.
The diploma says it all …

… provided you understand German. Our school was awarded this special prize by the Federal Government’s Secretary of Education for having supported the »Federal Mathematics Contest« with our contributions.

And since good things are never free (only the two or three best in life are), our school was given 250 euros to spend at its discretion.

Russian teachers visit FSG

Five lady teachers from our St Petersburg twin school visited FSG between November 5 and 11. They came without pupils because a regular student exchange did not materialize this year. Instead, FSG teachers invited them to be our guests.

The five colleagues have been responsible for organizing the exchange since 1990. It is due to their enthusiasm and energy that dozens of FSG pupils had the opportunity to gather valuable and highly instructive first-hand impressions of Russian life in politically fascinating times. Accordingly, the five colleagues were warmly received by FSG staff.

Read the full report of our Russian colleagues’ stay here.

Newspaper project to teach eighth-graders about dailies
Organized by local newspaper Ruhr-Nachrichten, »Newspaper Flirt«, an eighth-form project, began on November 11. The six-week project is to introduce our pupils to the newspaper business  – from journalism to printing and selling papers.
Music web page renewed

Herr Schattauer, one of our Music teachers, has just updated his web page giving detailed information on everything concerning music at FSG:

  • dates of school concerts
  • music downloads
  • listening samples of music discussed in class
  • midi links.
Parents’ and teachers’ consultation day

On Wednesday, November 27, the first of four parents’ and teachers’ consultation days took place. Pupils did not have to come to school, instead their parents thronged the school halls from 9 to 12 a.m. and from 3 to 6 p.m. In the school lobby they were greeted

  • by Ms Vakhilzadeh of »Lippe Book Shop«, who presented the newest schoolbooks and recent literary publications for the young
  • by our »Peace Village Supporters’ Club«, a group of pupils going back twenty years and raising funds for the Oberhausen Peace Village – this November by selling the Santa Clauses shown in the photograph (they were sold out quickly)
  • again, by boys and girls of our »Peace Village Supporters’ Club« catering to visitors in our impromptu cafeteria. As in previous years, cafeteria staff not only sold coffees and snacks but also collected from parents and students clothes, books and toys donated to be sent on to the Oberhausen peace project rehabilitating young war victims from all over the world.
Yes, there are some…
… boys and girls who – in spite of Germany’s rather mediocre PISA ranking  – love mathematics. And they even win prizes. Read more in the report written by Mathematics teachers Frau Ulla Schmidt and Herr Horst Hüllen.
Teams flock to gym at »Christmas Alumni Volleyball Tournament«

The FSG »Christmas Volleyball Tournament for Alumni« looks back on a ten-year tradition now, and never has it been as large as this year when enthusiastic teams flocked to the school gym on Saturday, November 30, 2002.

Read sports teacher Herr Stemmerich’s report about the event. Attention: Many pretty and rather detailed photographs, so be aware of long loading times.

FSG student teams compete in »Christmas Volleyball Tournament«

On Monday, December 16, it was the turn of FSG pupils to decide which of their volleyball teams was the best. From 2 p.m. onwards, hundreds of pupils cheered their favourite teams in our »Volleydrome« (a.k.a. the FSG gym).

A detailed report of the event – organized, again, by Frau Möllmann-Schmidt – is forthcoming.

The photograph shows some of the favourite fetishes of FSG volleyballers – on display in a showcase right next to the entrance to the staff and administrative wing.

Award-winning FSG course travels to Berlin for presentation of prizes
A Religious Education course taught by Herr Martin Loer has just been awarded one of the major prizes for its entry in a competition organized by the »Konrad Adenauer Foundation«, an institution affiliated with Germany’s »Christian Democratic Union« party (CDU). The students’ contribution was a website commemorating Luenen’s historical »Jew Lane«. Read also Herr Loer’s report for more details.
