Our school year...

... began formally on Monday, August 20, with a long staff meeting, with move-up re-examinations of under-achieving pupils that had to stay down at the end of the last school year, and, of course, with form masters’ lessons dedicated to the red tape inherent in the beginning of a new school year.

For all these reasons, the »real« beginning of the school year was generally felt to coincide with the introduction of the »little ’uns« – our new fifth-graders – on Wednesday, August 22.

The event was organized by Herr Graas, our new Orientation-Level Coordinator responsible for 5th and 6th grades, in co-operation with numerous other teachers and pupils from 6th grade onwards. Take a look at the programme for that special day!

This year’s 13th-form field trips...

… were scheduled for the period between September 7 and 15 and took students to

  • Gambassi Terme in Tuscany
  • Lower Silesia in Poland
  • Vienna
  • London

September 11, 2001

The terrorist attacks in the USA left their mark on FSG pupils, parents, teachers and alumni alike. Read their letters or e-mails (in English).

The »Festival of Languages«

To conclude the »European Year of Languages« at FSG, the school celebrated a »Festival of Languages« on Friday, September 21.

Parents, pupils, other guests and teachers were invited to take part in »mini language courses«, to taste delicious ethnic food, to watch foreign-language theatrical presentations, to listen to live music and to enjoy many more activities.

The many-faceted programme lasted from noon to 6 p.m.

Part of the programme was the publication of a magazine with articles by FSG pupils, parents, alumni and teachers. The articles give an idea of how the ability to speak foreign languages can change people’s lives.

September 26: The »European Day of Languages«
Six FSG girls, mostly of our 11th and 12th grades, were accompanied by Herr Suckrau to spend a day in Muenster. The girls had been invited to participate in the »Day of Special Events« organized by »Terber & Partner«, a firm specializing in international translations.
Foreign student exchange at FSG

From Friday, October 5, 2001, onwards, Ms Kirsten Thomale, English and German teacher at FSG, will advise students, parents and fellow teachers on matters related to foreign exchange programmes for students and recent alumni alike. Ms Thomale carries on the work done by Herr Weinhold since 1980.

In her new advisory capacity, Ms Thomale will cover these aspects:

  • information on international foreign exchange programmes (11th grade) for the student body and parents at large
  • individual advice to students and parents on international foreign exchange programmes
  • advice to students and recent alumni intending to become au-pairs
  • integration of foreign exchange students into FSG school life
»Union of German University Chairpersons« informs on courses

FSG students of grades 11to 13 may now check courses and universities at their ease and free of charge.

Murat Uyman dead

Teachers, parents and students at FSG are deeply shocked by the sad news that on Wednesday, October 24, 2001, Murat Uyman, alumnus of 1997, succumbed to the severe injuries he had incurred in a motorcycle accident the previous Monday.

More than four years after his graduation, Murat Uyman was still present to most FSG teachers and to many students and parents as well: Many of us saw him working in his family’s travel agency right across from Luenen’s public baths, and often he waved to us as we walked by the premises, or even came out to exchange a quick word or two.

All FSG teachers, parents and pupils who knew Murat will not fail to remember him as the friendly and optimistic person that he was.

New board of directors for »FSG Friends’ and Sponsors’ Club«

On October 25, the members of the »FSG Friends’ and Sponsors’ Club« held their annual meeting. At the top of the agenda was the election of a new board of directors, since the old board, after many years of dedicated service to both club and school, had declined to stand for re-election.

The new board members can all be reached via e-mail.

Table tennis vice championship goes to FSG

The FSG table tennis team won second place in Unna County’s table tennis championship held at »Römerberg Arena« in Oberaden on November 6. Under the tutelage of Herr Carsten Schröder, student teacher at FSG, Stefan Gresch (form 7c), Timo Butzke (form 7d), Christopher Peters (form 7d), Oscar Pakos (form 7d), Tobias Otto (form 7d), Sven Schützner (form 7d) and Sebastian Drews (form 6c) proved unstoppable right until the finals. 12th-grade student Sarah Gemicioglu co-coached at the event.

In the quarter finals the boys had managed to beat both City Gymnasium Bergkamen II and Kamen Comprehensive School 8:1 each. In the semi finals, the FSG team prevailed over Marie Curie Gymnasium, Boenen, at a score of 7:2.

However, in the finals the FSG team succumbed 5:4 to City Gymnasium Bergkamen I. »Considering that last year the Bergkamen school participated in the federal finals, the FSG team’s achievement cannot be overestimated,« Herr Schröder points out.

Former pupils’ soccer team wrests »Generations’ Cup« from teachers

On November 9, more than 7 enthused spectators watched the fascinating game in which the former pupils’ team took the trophy they had had to yield the year before.

Read the inspired report by former pupil Martin Israel and admire the vivid photographs!

Parents’ and teachers’ consultation day

In the ecclesiastical year, November 21 is the Day of Penance and Prayer for Germany’s Protestants.

Surely, it was a mere coincidence that in this scholastic year the first consultation day for parents and teachers was scheduled for Wednesday, November 21.

As has been the tradition for nearly twenty years, the school seizes the opportunity to let parents know what has been going on in the previous months and weeks. Read the first Letter to Parents of this year. Like all of the previous 70-plus editions, the Letter was edited and printed by Herr Gehrmann.

FSG pupils successful at DELF exams

The exam results for (DELF), the »Diplôme d’Etudes en Langue Française«, show it: FSG pupils do well in the exams for foreign language certificates.

Under the tutelage of French teacher Ms Thamm, 23 pupils were awarded certificates of proficiency in French at three levels:

  • 13 boys and girls passed the DELF exam at level A1
  • one pupil passed the A2 exam
  • nine pupils passed the A3 exam

Congratulations are due to the boys and girls who excelled in the exams as well as to Sarah Gemicioglu, who is the first FSG pupil to pass a DELF exam at level A4. As a consequence, Sarah was given a First-Degree DELF Diploma of Proficiency.

New DELF exams are coming up in January 2002. Already, 35 (!) boys and girls have signed up. Interestingly, there is also an application for a DELF exam at level A5 – for the first time in the history of DELF at FSG. If the applicant passes the exam, a Second-Degree DELF Diploma of Proficiency will be handed over to the lucky candidate.

FSG hosts visitors from Institution Jeanne d’Arc, Etampes

Can’t be true, can it? Seems like our French colleagues and their pupils said good-bye to us only last week, but a year has passed since their last visit to Lünen, and here another group has arrived from Etampes to take part in our school life and to catch a glimpse of German family life.

The FSG French department under the guidance of Ms Haverkamp and Ms Thamm prepared the programme for the stay.

Fantastic turnout at Christmas Alumni Volleyball Tournament

The oldest participants are closing in on fifty, the youngest are barely twenty years old: The annual »WWT«, our Christmas Volleyball Tournament for FSG graduates, definitely spans the generations. This year, it was held on Saturday, December 1. A good time was had by all, as you can see in the many photographs illustrating Herr Stemmerich’s lively, albeit tongue-in-cheek report.

FSG’s final exam candidates can now calculate likely exam success themselves

A neat little »Microsoft Excel« application now enables FSG students in their final year to calculate the grade average they will probably achieve in their final exams. The algorithm was programmed by Michael Müller, student of our 13th grade. The application, which works on Macintoshes and on Windows computers alike, can be downloaded here.

Knowing the grade average of one’s Abitur diploma is both complicated and important: Until Michael wrote the application, students either had to use very intricate formulae to compute their grade average themselves, or they had to wait for the official results to be handed out by their counsellors. Only with their exact grade average figure were students then able to evaluate their chances at being allowed to study one of the more sought-after academic subjects. Those studies – like medicine or architecture – are open only to Gymnasium graduates with a certain – usually rather high – grade average.

»New Zealand, here I come!«

It’s only another four weeks before Romy Siegert of Form 10b will be »leaving on a jet plane« to fly to New Zealand, where she is to spend a year as a »Youth for Understanding« exchange student.

From December 6 to 12, Romy stayed at the YfU Student Training Centre in Nienwohld, near Hamburg, to learn as much as possible about making a success of one’s exchange year. Read Romy’s lively report.

»Lünen, here I come!«

Beth Ramborger, former American exchange student at FSG ten years ago, made a quick detour to Lünen before returning home for Christmas to her native Seattle, Washington. Beth, who works for a U.S. government agency, had been in Southern Germany on business for a few days.

Hardly a year has passed since 1991 that Beth didn’t come to Lünen to visit friends and to stay with her host family, Mr and Mrs Volkmer.

It was great to see you again, Beth!

Report about field trip to Poland now in the World Wide Web

The reports and the pictures of the field trip to Krzyzowa (Poland) have just been uploaded to the FSG website.

Marius Hempel, a student of our 13th grade and participant of the field trip to Poland, was responsible for the layout of the Poland pages.

The last photograph: After a speedy trip of a mere ten hours or so, students unload their suitcases from the bus’s luggage hold. Next stop: home!

Fuegen 2002

Every year, all ninth-grade forms spend ten days at the Austrian skiing resort of Fuegen in order to be introduced to the tricks of »white magic«.

This year, the first group – comprising forms 9a and 9c – departed from Luenen on January 7 and returned on January 16.

Look at the 22 pictures spread out over five web pages. Each page is about 1 MB in size.

New: »Current events« page now available in French
Dominik Wied, pupil of our tenth grade, has taken up the post as editor of the new French-language pages in the FSG school website. His first job right after the Christmas holidays was to translate the »Current affairs« page you are reading now. Why don’t you look up the new page!
